Information about Novel Coronavirus (2019 nCoV)

Given the recent media coverage about the 2019 nCoV, we would like to share some important information with you as we prepare for the start of school on Wednesday.

As a school, we follow both Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education advice when responding to situations such as this. The Ministry of Education has recently updated all schools with information and advice. The advice currently is that the risk of an outbreak in New Zealand is low and there is no specific action that we need to take as a school.

We do however acknowledge that we will have some families who have travelled abroad over the holiday period.  If you have recently travelled to China, particularly Wuhan, Thailand, South Korea or Japan please be aware of the risk of infection from 2019 nCoV.  We ask that you take particular care in monitoring and assessing the health of your children and wider family in case anyone in your family develops a fever, cough or respiratory illness.  Please do not send your child to school if you suspect that they could be unwell. See your doctor immediately if a fever develops and explain your travel destinations to ensure that health professionals are fully informed.

Please notify the school immediately if your child or a member of your family has contracted or been exposed to anyone with the 2019 nCoV.

All families are encouraged to follow these basic principles to reduce the general risk of acute respiratory infections:

  • Keep your child at home if he or she develops a fever and visit a health professional
  • Avoid close contact with a person with an acute respiratory infection
  • Frequently wash hands
  • Practice cough etiquette – maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing and wash hands
  • People with asthma and other types of cough should inform others of their condition to promote understanding rather than anxiety

If the Ministry of Health recommend more serious measures in forthcoming weeks, rest assured that the school will implement them.  We will continue to update you with information as required.

The Ministry of Health has created the following link which has information and updates about the virus –

We look forward to welcoming the Stanhope Road School community back on Wednesday.

Kind Regards
