Dear Parents A very warm welcome back for the 2012 academic year at SRS. It has been a great pleasure seeing all our students and staff return to school looking refreshed, smiling and full of energy. Thank goodness for the summer holidays! During the holidays we farewelled Mr Woodmass who has moved to another school. We wish him all the best and thank him for all his hard work at our school. Mr Gillespie has been appointed to teach that Y7 class and we are very pleased to welcome him to SRS. We have enrolled a large number of new students - from NE to Y8. A very warm SRS welcome to our school community. One major difference this year, is the disappearance of our very popular Lagoon Stadium Kiwisports Programme for Teams 1, 2 & 3. The Mt Wellington Foundation has been very generous over many years, in funding this programme for our school. Unfortunately, escalating costs have meant that they have had to stop. However, we will still have a very full sports programme, supplemented by skilled coaches visiting our school.

Dear Parents In the last part of this term, school has been busy with a flurry of events. Team 4 had a wonderful trip to see the NZ Ballet last week. Our Y7 students had a fantastic “Big Day Out” last Friday. Team 2 have been to Rock Climbing and to Swimarama. Our Y8 Students are away at camp all week in the Waikato region. One thing that all these events have in common is the hard work put into planning these events by the teachers - so a very big thank to them. Then there is all the hard work during the day, ensuring that all runs smoothly and safely - another big thank you. However, the most gratifying thing is the fact that we are constantly complimented on the excellent behaviour of our students when they go out of the school for trips or activities. This is a credit to the teachers, parents and students. Something we can all feel proud of. End of year reports for Y1 - 6 will go home on Monday. Y7/8 will be able to collect their reports at the prizegiving evening on Wed 14 December (starts 7.00pm). Please note that there will be a slip with the report, telling which class your child will be in next year.

Dear Parents Here we are again…. only three weeks to go before the end of another school year. A very warm welcome to the families who have recently enrolled their children in our school. At the moment teachers have completed end of year assessments and are putting the finishing touches to the end of year reports. However, there will still be a strong focus on learning - right up until the end of the school year. Looking out the office window at the moment, while a weather front passes through with strong winds and rain acts as a strong reminder that it is spring time with wild weather changes in a very short space of time. Despite that, I’d like parents to be aware that our school pool is heated and the water is at a very comfortable temperature for swimming tuition. We are very lucky to have such a beautiful school pool, so we like to have all our students participate fully in the swimming programme.

Dear Parents I am very pleased to be back at SRS after being on Sabbatical leave during Term 3. It was a very refreshing and special time. I am very appreciative of being granted this opportunity by the Ministry of Education and the BOT. The highlights included attending a very high level Educational Research Conference in Exeter in England and visiting other schools in England and NZ. I will eventually complete my report and will make it available for any interested parents. A very big thank you to Mr Wilson, the Senior Management Team and staff for keeping the school running so well in my absence.

Dear Parents and Caregivers 1 September 2011 It was so nice having sunny days over the previous couple of weeks and to see the days drawing out now that we have officially reached the start of spring. Unfortunately the nicer weather also brings unwelcome weekend activities at school such as an increase in vandalism through tagging. It was quite heartbreaking to see the amount of tagging which greeted us when we got to school on Monday this week. We welcome families using our grounds out of school hours and hope that your presence will deter the vandals from coming in when they see responsible people at school. Please let us know if you do see something happening that you know is not right.

Dear Parents and Caregivers 18 August 2011 What a wintry week it has been this week so I hope that you have all been able to keep warm. It does at least give us a better understanding of how difficult it must be for those in the South Island areas. affected by the earthquake as well. The sunny days which have then followed our chilly mornings have I’m sure, cheered us all up.

Dear Parents and Caregivers 4 August 2011 I am really enjoying being the Acting Principal at Stanhope Road School and look forward to sharing the term with you, your children and the dedicated staff of the school. I was delighted when Mr Nevezie asked me to be Acting Principal for this term because I have always held him in very high regard having been Principal at Ellerslie School for 17 years to 2005 and seen his dedication to Stanhope Road School. I left Ellerslie School to teach in the UK and travel in Europe for a couple of years before returning to NZ where I have been Acting Principal at three schools. A lot of the rest of the time is spent enjoying NZ by motorhome with my wife.

Dear Parents Firstly, a big thank you to all the parents who managed to attend the parent-teacher interviews last week. The school average attendance was 88%, which is a very pleasing figure. I have heard from many staff how much they enjoyed meeting and talking to parents. I was also very pleased to hear that many of the meetings involved the children in discussions about their own progress as well as next steps for learning. If you would like to provide the school with any feedback regarding the interviews or the mid-year reports we would be very interested in your views and comments. You could either send in a note addressed to the principal or send me an email: cnevezie@stanhope.school.nz As already mentioned, I will be away on Sabbatical leave next term. The acting principal, Mr Jo Wilson will be available if any parents have any concerns or even if you’d just like to pop in and say hello. His email contact will be: jwilson@stanhope.school.nz Wishing all our families a pleasant and restful time over the coming holidays.

Thursday 23 June 2011 Dear Parents Yesterday was a very special and successful day at SRS. After running the Chopper Challenge for most of this term, it concluded with a Westpac Rescue Helicopter flying in and landing on our school field - which was very exciting for our students, staff and parents who came along. I was very proud of the way our students conducted themselves during the visit and I know that the Chopper Challenge Team and crew were also impressed. The lucky SRS students who enjoyed a flight in the helicopter yesterday were: Sam Russell, Kevante Peterson, Jameel Hussein, Marcus Merila, Nikesh Nama, Rosalie Roper, Tre Merlo, Caitlin Coker, Sifa Halatanu and Aaron Gaerlan. We were very pleased to be able announce that our school community raised a total of just over $6,000 to donate to the Rescue Helicopter Trust. We believe that they do a very important job for the community and it has been an excellent project for our school to be involved in. A big thank you to all the families that have supported us during the Chopper Challenge.

Dear Parents I was doing quite well with the planned schedule of newsletters every second Thursday, but the wheels fell off this week - just too busy yesterday! However it’s only one day late…. School is humming along very well. One measure of this, is the quality of our school assemblies on Mondays. Each Monday, a different Team takes responsibility for running the school assembly (9.00 - 9.30am). I have been impressed with the work shared and the generally pleasant, warm tone of the assemblies. Please note that parents are always welcome to attend assemblies.

We are almost at the end of week three and school is “ticking along nicely”. Your should have received a Team Term 2 newsletter by now, so if you have missed out please ask for a copy via the classroom teacher. The Team Newsletters mention many things you need to know about, in order for you to help your child make the most of learning opportunities at school, so please take the time to read them.

Welcome back for the second term. This is also a long one at 11 weeks. A special welcome to our new families. School has settled in smoothly and we are off to a great start. It looks like another busy term ahead.
